How do I register to vote?
There are three ways to register to vote in North Carolina. Voters can register through the Department of Motor Vehicles online here; mail in their voter registration information using this paperwork, which is available in English and Spanish; or go in person to the DMV. Find DMV locations here.
The last day to register to vote for the March 5 primary is Friday, Feb. 9. If a voter misses the deadline, they can register to vote at early in-person voting which takes place from Feb. 15 to March 2.

When are North Carolina elections taking place this year?
The North Carolina primary election, which determines who will appear on the general election ballot, will take place on Tuesday, March 5. The general election will take place on Tuesday, Nov. 5.
What key races are on the ballot this year?
Most notably, the presidential race will be on this year's primary and general election ballots. Additionally in North Carolina, the highest seat in the state, governor, will also appear on the ballot.

What do I need to take to the polls?
Voters must bring an acceptable form of photo identification to the polls. Many voters will use a North Carolina driver's license. To see a full list of acceptable photo ID, click here.
Don't have a photo ID? Get a free photo ID card from your county's board of elections here. If voters show up without ID, they can still vote by filling out an ID Exception Form and cast a ballot.
If voting by mail, voters must include a photocopy of their photo ID.
What do I need to know about absentee voting?
Any registered North Carolina voter can request a mail-in ballot. They do not need to provide an excuse to receive one. However, mail-in ballots are not automatically sent to registered voters. Voters can request a mail-in ballot through this online portal or by mail with this form.
What are the deadlines for mail-in ballots?
Requests for mail-in ballots must be sent in by the Tuesday before an election day. For the primary election taking place on Tuesday, March 5, the deadline for mail-in ballot requests is Tuesday, Feb. 27.
Mail-in ballots must arrive at the county board of elections office by 7:30 p.m. March 5, election day. There is no grace period for ballots postmarked by election day that do not arrive on time.
What about early voting?
Early in-person voting for the March 5 primary takes place between Thursday, Feb. 15, and Saturday, March 2. Find an early voting polling place here. Note that early voting polling places are not the same as election day polling places.
